New year and good news...

Hi Guys, where has January gone? lol

I've been busy training with my local council again and this time it's about writing care plans with social services - I thought that would be really helpful for our wee Carer group!

Coo's been really tired this week and hasn't wanted to go out much at all, I think it's just the after Christmas lull most people experience in January but I'll keep an eye on things just in case.

Good, infact brilliant news...meet Jessica!

Our much awaited first grand-baby has finally arrived! Woo Hoo!
She's pictured in a tartan heart because, being born on the 25th of January makes her a Burns baby!
My friend Cally says she's lucky as people the world over celebrate on her birth day and as daddy's a Scots Guard it was a perfect day for her arrival in his book! lol
Coo and I are tickled pink at being grand-parents - can you tell!

So you could say, for the moment, here, things are in the pink! lol
I hope things are good where you are too!

Happy New year 2012...

Hi guys and a 'Happy New Year' to you! lol

Coo and I have had a good time this week visiting family.
We've had a laugh and it's been fun and that's despite the gales and storms we're still experiencing here on Scotlands blustery west coast!
Look it this...wild or what! lol

I hope the weather improves soon. It's very grey and dark and that really doesn't inspire happy thoughts or help anyone's mood for that matter. We'd like a nice wee spell of wintery sun, and wouldn't that be good!

This storm sure has caused some havoc!
My wee green-house still badly needs some help and assistance but I've decided not to risk having a go now. I'm waiting it out until the wind has gone and then we'll re-build for spring - just in time for planting - yeah!

Well then, how did 2011 shape up in the end?

Mm...well, it wasn't a brilliant year health-wise, still lot's of seizures for Coo but in recent times, I guess it's not been the worse either so I'm counting my blessings!
I'm hoping it's going to be a hale & hearty year for us all this time around, even a little improvement would be nice for Coo and I!

I've been really busy in 2011 too!

Things were a bit hectic at times, with Caring, campaigning both locally and nationally and the usual appointments and hospital visits that are always on the go!
This year I'm going to re-evaluate just what I realistically can do and set some boundaries - well I'm going to try!
I know, I know...I need to be busy and I'm passionate about Carers issues so I'm going to keep up with the work I've already committed to with the Local Authorities Carer Strategies and personalisation care plans and also Carerscotland. They are important to me and what's more I'm proud to be involved with them and pushing for a better deal for all Carers. God only knows, I sure would be lost without the Direct Payment that enables me to have some sort of time outside caring and I want the same benefits for other Carers and what's wrong with that!

So in our own scots way....'Slainte Mhath'!
You may well ask...Slainte-what?

Well, it's an old Scots toast to Good Health and around here it's pronounced...
'slanj-e- vah' - isn't our language really quirky! lol

Lastly from a not so sunny (more like stormy!) Scotland...

I hope the new year's kind to you wherever you are!

Carers & Surviving Christmas...

Hi Guys, well have we all survived ok? I hope so! lol

Christmas is such a challenging time for most Carers isn't it? Well I usually find it that way anyways! lol
It's really nice to be around family, if your lucky enough to be able to get out and join in but sometimes that creates it's own challenges too.
Between the changes in routine and beds 'n' meds times add in the ...

Rich foods and the obligatory chocolate munching that usually accompanies Christmas and I think everybody suffers a little bit don't they and no wonder! lol

One thing though, I never touch alcohol - never really liked the taste much and Coo rarely drinks too as it affects his meds.
He does have the odd beer at this time of year though, and so far it's not done any harm so I think we've done ok!

Coo's been no worse than usual and better than some other Christmas times I can think of, so all-in-all we've survived the Christmas splurge this time around - Woo hoo!

Just new year around the corner and we're home and dry!
I hope you're surviving things too!

Carers & Christmas shopping...

Hi guys, well...are you all ready for Christmas?

I'm never ready - but I'm usually more organised than this! lol
First Coo's and then my nasty cold, kinda de-railed things a little bit and we've been caught a bit on the hop this year.
Luckily, I got a few things ordered online (in between sneezes!) so it wasn't too bad but really!

I never go shopping on Christmas eve...ever!
Now I remember why....it's a bit of a stress-ball-struggle isn't it! lol

Fast and ferocious are two words that spring to mind!
Shopping is kinda crazy this time of year and people seem to go a little nuts don't they?

Anyways...I guess it was real lucky I only wanted some last minute bits, a cuppa and...back home again! lol

Thank God for our Direct Payment and thank goodness Looby was here too as Coo would not have coped well with all that hustle and bustle and we'd both have been totally stressed out! I went with my mum instead and nothing much fazes her in a hurry! lol

We manged to hit the shops, stop off for a lovely cup of tea and casually make for home while everyone else was still fighting at the chocolate and perfume counters!

Now, if I can just find the quiet hour I need to finish wrapping parcels it'll all be done! - Woo Hoo!

Who carers when Carers are ill...

Hi guys, the dreaded has happened! I have a stinker of a cold!

I think it's the same one Coo had the other week and now my system has given up the ghost and fell down with it too- typical!

The weather is terrible too, rain and gale force winds - what a week!
My wee greenhouse has taken a bit of a battering and come to think of it, maybe me running around chasing the roof panels in the wet, has contributed to said stinky cold!
Note to self ...next time, just like Piglet here...let 'em fly...it's just not worth getting ill! lol

Anyways, my plant pots are strewn everywhere too so all-in-all our garden looks a sorry sight and it'll just have to keep as there's no way either of us are in good enough shape to sort it out yet!

So I got to thinking, just who does look after the Carers when they're ill? Well, that's a good question isn't it!
I think if you're lucky, family can come help out and if not...well, you're kinda on your own with things and just have to carry on regardless! Now that just isn't fair and I suspect most Carers are in the latter category and need to muddle on as best they can and I think that's easier said than done!

I'm lucky in some respects, as when Coo's awake, he can help out and make the odd cup of tea but then the down-side kicks in as he quickly tires, sleeps and...yes, you've guessed it...seizes. They're never far away that's for sure but at least, between us, we can mostly manage!

I really worry for those Carers where that is not the case and when the Carer is ill, the person they care for is not able to help at all! Who picks up the strings and helps them?
Probably nobody - We need a better system!

My mum and dad popped in just to make sure we were ok, at times like these I'm kinda glad they only live a few minutes away! We have a system though as sometimes getting out just isn't an option for Coo and I so the delivery man brings the shopping and if things get really crazy...I'll use some of my Direct Payment holiday and send for Looby!

Meanwhile, we'll just keep cosy indoors and wait it out!
Let's hope this stinky cold goes soon and...normal service can be resumed! lol

Hope you're fairing better in the sniffy and snuffly stakes where you are! lol

Carers voices...

Hi guys, all Carers know how important it is to get their voices heard!

That's especially true when it comes to your local authority as it's generally the key to getting better services and support. With that in mind, I'm still heavily involved with my local councils personalisation and Carer strategies. I figure, if you want changes and improved services, you need to be prepared to give some real time and get ready to...push!

Probably most Carers will be able to identify with this too...
In my experience, dealing with the Local Authority (or N.H.S.), usually means digging out your hard hat and flak jacket and preparing for the long-haul and it's usually very stressful and a real struggle for all concerned too!

That's why I feel, real Carers just like you and me must have their voices heard - it's important! Who knows better than other Carers, just what is working (or not working for that matter!), with current services around caring?

I know it's not easy finding time, it never is for Carers, who sometimes feel pulled in all directions trying to negotiate the best deal they can! Really, what we all need to keep in mind, is Carers are one of the most essential parts of the system as without them the whole care system fails - it just doesn't work!
In most cases we the Carers, are the glue holding it all together so it really makes sense to just Care for the Carers! It sounds so simple doesn't it so why doesn't it happen?

In our area, this time at least, the local council are trying to get it right! To enable Carers to attend meetings and be fully involved, they've actually paid respite costs! Now, that sounds such a simple thing, but it's the difference between being able to give your input or be left out the loop!
They've asked lots of Carers and service users for their honest opinions, what they really think and they seem to have taken their views on board - now isn't that a new approach!

Thank God for this change in attitude as more than ever before Carers have been able to sit around the table with the decision makers and at the earliest stage - what a change!
I must say, I'm impressed with how things have gone so far and I'm pleased to see they have at last recognised the work and commitment Carers provide. It's been a long time coming but it is a real and positive step isn't it!

Hopefully things will continue to improve!

Quilting is Quite brilliant fun...

Hi guys! I've been trying my hand at quilting recently and it's been great fun!

Some lovely ladies from a local craft group came to visit my wee Carer meeting a few weeks ago and well, you know me, I like to try out any kind of crafts!
I was totally enthralled by all the lovely fabrics and just what the ladies had managed to create with them...I was hooked! LOL

Now, I've never really used my sewing machine much, if truth be told I actually bought it for my daughter some years back and have only, occasionally tinkered with it...until now that is! Just like McDonalds say...I'm lovin' it! lol

Bearing in mind, I wasn't really confident on my own at all and it's not a quiet craft that I can do while Coo's sleeping either (sewing machines make a bit of a racket don't they!) so my quilting time has been a bit limited. Even though, I've really only been working on my quilting for a couple of hours on a Friday, in three visits, I've managed to turn this wee pile of scrap material...

Into a wee baby's first Christmas quilt for wee baby B, our eagerly awaited Grand-baby!

So what do you think?

Now, some of the seams are a little bit wonky here and there, and it's definately not a work of art but...

I'm really rather pleased with it!

Wee baby B will know in years to come that Grandma made her very first quilt just for him or her! lol

I'm finding more and more that crafts and new experiences, really give me so much back, they make me smile and I have a real feel-good factor too. I think they're a bit of an antidote to the other stressful parts of my life and that can only be good for me!

I hope your happy too, try some crafts - it sure works for me! lol

The new 'elf service...

Hi guys, Coo and I had a lovely day yesterday!

It was the local community centre's Christmas Fayre and it was brilliant fun!

Judging from the title of todays post...can you guess just what my job was? LOL

Here I am with one of Santa's littlest helpers...baby Bryce!
At 3 weeks old, isn't he a cutie!
Sixty children all went to visit Santa and got some Christmas Chocolate!
They wrote their Santa letters and got to feed his reindeer too and all for FREE!

Our community is not the most wealthy and finance is usually a bit tight this time of year and as a Carer, I know first hand, just how challenging things can be at Christmas, especially if you have some little ones too!

Free events are brilliant and best of all?
Well, they raise community spirit and for a wee while, everyone feels included and equal and all the children get exactly the same regardless of wealth so job's a good 'un!

All-in-all, everyone shared in a real family Christmassy day and for once nobody needed lot's of pennies either so...smiles all around!

Carer Campaigning...

Hi Guys! I was feeling a bit pensive after my last post!

When I realised it was over two years since the 'Justice for Carer' march in Edinburgh I was shocked! It really was a great, feel-good experience that day, Carers did come together and speak up for themselves and it was great!

I think it's a shame though, there's been nothing like it since!

On reflection, I've come to think that, we Carers have not given up - not at all!

We're still active and if the others are anything like me, they're just as busy campaigning as ever but at local level instead, fighting the system for better services.

I guess that's no bad thing either, as everytime somebody pushes for service improvements it results in help for us all in the end!

So...we all must stand together and keep up the good fight as best we can!

Meetings, Ponderings and poems...

Hi Guys, so...how did it go today at the meeting with my Local Authority? Well...pretty good in my opinion!
I managed to raise some points and speak up for Carers so I'm happy!

Today helped remind me of the time I joined with other Carers from all over Scotland to march and rally at our Parliament. Is it really two years ago? I hadn't realised but it was over two years ago my wee Carer group made the trip to Edinburgh and spoke up for themselves...so exactly what has changed? Have things improved at all for Carers?

Well, financially things are much the same - not good.
Carers allowance is still the lowest paid pension of all and really isn't fit for purpose anymore. Many of our politicians have said as much themselves and on numerous occasions too but it's still a real big issue that needs attention and the sooner the better!

On a positive note though, Carers have become more vocal and now do have some confidence to take on the big Care Agencies, the Local Authorities and the N.H.S. too for that matter. I think more and more often Carers are realising they have to step up and be prepared to lobby for changes and better services.

Two years ago a consultation which included both Carers and Service-Users would have been unheard of. Social Workers and their managers would have gone away wrote a document and probably said - take it or leave it! This time around...this just has not happened!
The council, have actively engaged and asked Carers for their opinion on what does and doesn't work and that's a major mind-shift and has to be great news for Carers!

I think the poem I wrote two years ago for the march on parliament is still so very real and apt today, I guess we still have a lot more to do don't we...

Here's my poem...

*** ‘Just a little Peace’***

We don’t need any help, we’re managing fine,
Pile it on…pile it on…never look for a sign.
Carers work on with not much of a break,
They continue to care for a loved ones sake.

As the caring goes on and the load does increase,
God send us some respite, just a little peace.
Some time to go walking, kicking leaves in the park,
even just sleeping when everything’s dark.
The caring continues deep into the night,
we struggle and strive and continue to fight.
For help it is out there or so we are told,
but trying to find it...you need to be bold.

Some time for a break, to do something new.
Maybe just sit still and take time for you.
Reading a book or watching a show,
Finish something, not having to go.
As the caring goes on and the load does increase,
God send us some respite, just a little peace.

It’s not easy to spot us, we look just like you.
Carers are working and constantly too.
When others go home at the end of the day,
We still keep on working, minus the pay.
Please listen now, it’s so easy to find,
Yourself as a Carer and stuck in this bind.
Nobody knows how, it just happens unplanned,
as quick as that jar with the small grains of sand.

Heed what we say as we carry on,
caring and struggling way past the dawn.
we know lots of Carers who live in this way,
it’s not what they asked for, this role that they play.

Some time to themselves it’s not much to expect.
It’s down to government and Scottish Exec.
Some help with this task that never seems to cease.

Coo and me and D.P.

Hi guys! Coo's latest anti-biotic run is finally over!

Things seem to be improving now and although tired from the latest on-slaught, we're both a bit more settled now so...result - woo hoo!
Looby's come to stay as this week as I've got lot's of pot's on the boil...what's new! LOL

Thank God for our D.P. (Direct Payment!), without which I just would not be able to manage the things that are important to me. It's amazing just how much the precious timeout gives me. It's not just about the time away, it's the fact I don't have to worry about Coo while I am busy. I know he's just fine with Looby and that's something of value as I can really switch off for a bit. All in all, it kinda helps keeps me sane!

I've a big meeting tomorrow with our local council, remember I mentioned, they had asked me to help with their new personalisation strategy? Well, tomorrow is the next stage.

You know, there was a time where I would not easily have spoken out in public and been comfortable to challenge authority, be it Government, N.H.S. or Council but I think being a Carer has changed me!
I guess, always having to keep pushing for services does tend to make you more assertive. it's a bit of a sink or swim situation at times and in my experience if you're not prepared to do your homework and then just go get 'em, well, you just don't get the help you need.

Now in an ideal world, it shouldn't be like this but I find it frequently is and that's why it's so important to me to keep speaking out for a better deal for all Carers!
So, let's give a wee silent prayer for every one of us Carers who can stand up and say...hey! We need your help and even better...this is exactly how you can help us!

We need to stay strong and hopefully one day, Carers will all feel supported and be able to access the help they need!

Anti-bio-land again...

Hi Guys, Coo's still poorly and back on yet another anti-biotic run.

We've been stuck at home this week as things have been a bit of a struggle.

We went as usual on Friday, for Coo's routine blood test and everything seemed fine but by Saturday evening he had a temperature of 39 degrees (102.2F) and was seizing a lot! He didn't really improve much over the weekend but his temperature came down a little so he decided to wait it out and see our own doctor on Monday - Coo hates the midnight dash to hospital and we avoid it at all costs!

Turns out he's picked up a bacterial infection from somewhere and needed yet more antibiotics!
Thankfully though, they are beginning to work now and he's feeling a little better today.

We're both shattered, apart from that, we're fine and glad to be out the other side of this latest health hassle!

While at home, I've kept myself busy with my harp and my craft box. Extra time at home is not the issue it once was.
I've found lots of ways to keep myself amused and have a little fun!

I hope things are a bit more settled this week and that you're having a more settled time where you are too!

Carers Conference 2011

Hi Guys, it's been a bit of a busy week this time around!

On Wednesday I left the coast and travelled up to Glasgow for the annual Carers Conference.

It's always a good chance to meet other Carers and hear just what's happening to services in their areas and it seems cuts to day-care service in particular is being hit really hard here in Scotland.
***Now, that is a big worry!
Every Carer I know, desperately needs the precious few hours respite just to help them keep going!

In our caring situation, we don't use day-care services at all so I was not really aware how under threat this service is but I'm going to find out!

Carers Scotland...

I was elected last month so...for the very first time, I'm a fully fledged member of the Carers Scotland Committee! There's a lot of experience and also a lot of enthusiasm and passion within the group so I'm hoping we can successfully channel it all and help Carers get a better deal and make sure their voices are heard! We so deserve it don't we!

Growing some smiles...

Hi Guys, I saw this and really liked the sentiment so I thought I'd share!

Wouldn't it be nice if, as well as growing veggies, we could grow some sunny smiles too? It's a real nice idea isn't it! I know I'd sure buy some, especially for those grey winter days when it's sometimes hard to stay positive, a bunch of ready made smiles would be just dandy then! lol

Incidently, it's still raining here!
That's rain every day of October so far!

Just like this wee lady here, I'm guessing, I'm gonna have a lot of use for my unbrella too!

Happy thoughts even if it is still raining!

Coughs & sneezes...

Hi Guys, how does the old saying go?
Coughs and sneezes spread diseases...well, they certainly do!

Coo's cold must have still been kicking around his system 'cause it's back! He's been snuffly and sleepy, pretty much all day.
I guess I'll be cancelling his blood appointment for tomorrow as with this cold, his white cells and drug levels will be all over the place anyway so there's no point in getting them done again until he's feeling better!

The weather here has been dire over the last few weeks, rain, rain and yet more...you've guessed it rain!
It's definately wellie wearing weather here! LOL
Now, living on the west coast, you'd think we'd be used to it by now, and we are...kinda! but no, even for here it's been like a monsoon recently!

I got soaked through, running down the garden to my wee green-house for some veggies earlier. Serves me right though, I thought I'd just dash out quick and didn't bother with a jacket or wellies!
Well...lesson learned or I'll end up sniffling myself if I'm not careful!

Let's hope this rain doesn't last too much longer, some nice sunny weather, even just a bit of a dry spell would be nice don't you think? lol

I hope you've got some sunshine where you are and more importantly, at the very least some sunny thoughts to cheer you! Keep cozy (and dry!).

Peace Reigns...

Hi Guys, peace has been restored and that wee cuppa definately helped me keep strong this week! LOL
Coo's mood swings are now over and thank God for that! I was beginning to lose my patience but it held out and now, things are pretty much back to normal - Yeah!

I was so busy last week and I guess I didn't see the warning signs! You know, at times, I sometimes forget how poorly Coo is and I suppose, it's probably the same with lot's of hidden disabilities. Well, the person looks ok, you're busy and struggling yourself and you just forget to make the necessary allowances...until it's too late!
One thing's for sure, it's not long before you're brought back to earth with a bump and need to cope with a whole lot of other issues and quickly too!

No wonder I say the life of a Carer is never boring!

I guess you just do the best you can and learn how to roll with the punches! lol

At least it's all quiet now so...Happy Days! LOL

I hope it's happy where you are too!

Hard hat time again...

Hi guys, It's hard hat and flak jacket time here yet again and just a touch difficult!
We've got the usual seizure activity but for some reason major mood swings have reared their ugly head and it's been pretty much awful today.

I'm not sure what's caused it but at this point, it's not really the main issue, keeping a lid on things is though and it 'aint easy!

Sometimes, I'm not sure what's the most challenging, all the seizure activity or the moods and hassles that come along with them!

just now...well, I'm having a wee cuppa and...
...trying to hold onto what's left of my patience!

Please God, let things start to improve soon!

I hope it's peaceful where you are!

I've been at a few of their conferences and as you know, I've been campaigning for Carers rights for a while now too so I'm looking forward to this new challenge!

Birthdays...

Hi Guys, it was my birthday yesterday so another year older!

I don't really feel so very much differently and all things considered, I'm doing pretty ok well, in my book anyway! LOL I didn't go out for lunch (the usual birthday treat) as I was already working at a conference so I guess that's something still to come! woo hoo!

Good news though, Coo's anti-biotics have now kicked in, he's doing much better and Looby's been here this week to lend a hand too so...job's a good 'un! LOL
I'm glad things are settling a little bit for Coo as I'm concious the weather has really cooled here and flu-time is almost upon us again. Now 'aint that a wee cheery thought! lol I really must sort out the flu jabs soon!

It's no joke though!
While the news and weather for southern parts is dry and record-breaking sunshine, here...

It's been blowing a hooley and we've had monsoon-like rain today!
For a small country our weather sure isn't consistent! While the south sun-bathe it's definately wellie wearing weather here!

Never mind, it's always warm, dry and cosy indoors! LOL

Back in Anti-bio-land...

Hi Guys, Coo's back on the anti-biotics...again!

The not so lovely cold that's been kicking around his system, has now made it's way into his lungs. He's got yet another chest infection and we all know what that means...a temperature and lot's more seizures - poor coo!

Thank goodness Looby's been here today as I had another meeting and really wanted to go! It was on our campaign about supporting local community centres here in Ayrshire.

Our council is thinking about closing them and the group I'm involved with are trying to make them think again and I really hope they do!

Sometimes, I think do I really have time for everything, caring, campaigning and the other issues disability brings with it and then I think, can I really afford not to!
so...
From somewhere the strength comes and the fight goes on!

More on Personalisation...

Hi Guys, remember a few months ago, I posted saying, I was working with my Local Authority?
Well, I've been at it again! lol

The Council asked for Carers and Service users to come along and offer their input on the new strategy for social care and we did!
It was an interested afternoon.
Around our table were Carers for people with physical disabilities, mental health issues, elderly and children so it was quite a good cross-section.

I seemed to be in the minority as a Carer whose family already had a Direct Payment up and running so I was happy to share my experience of just how it works for us. I explained that I now wouldn't be without it and don't know how I managed before!

I'm glad things have moved on.
At least disabled people and their Carers are now asked what services they require and don't just have to accept what is offered in a take it or leave it kind of way!

It's really great more people now feel able to stand up for themselves and push for better services as in the end, this can only benefit everyone!

I say Power to the people! LOL

Hard hat time again...

Hi guys, I've been down with a cold this last week and worse of all I have now shared it with Coo and we all know what that means...lot's and lot's of seizures!
I've had to dig out that hard hat and flak jacket again!

I think, we're over the worst now and Looby's been a Godsend!

I'm so glad we have our Direct Payment as before, at times like these, I always felt torn and troubled asking her for help but as Looby's our P.A. too and it's her job, it's now a lot easier to manange. She can usually move things around and come stay for a bit and that makes all the difference!

I hope things improve soon and until they do...

I'm keeping cosy warm and spoiling us both with lot's of lovely hot-chocolate!

Back from Respite...

Hi guys, I'm back from respite!
Things went well, Coo was no worse than usual and Looby coped just fine and best of all, I had a good few days away with my mum in...
Blackpool! Woo hoo!

I had been a bit unsettled before I left as Coo had some real problems last week but I'm pleased to say things went well and so...it's all good! lol

The famous tower has a revamp!
Now just how cool does this look?

Impressed? I sure was as I tentatively stepped out! It's a very surreal feeling, I got a bit of a heart flutter standing right out there in the clouds! It's kinda un-nerving but certainly an exciting experience that's for sure - wow what a rush! lol

Respite, what does it mean for me?
Well, it's really a time to switch off from Carer responsibilities and just chill, please myself and generally enjoy the freedoms most people kinda take for granted!

I'm so greatful for the Direct Payment that makes it possible for my few precious days away and I guess it's helps that I know Coo's in good hands with Looby. It makes all the difference in the world and means I can relax and get a real benefit too!

You know what?
I love that little bit of me time, It reminds me to look after me too and with that thought...

Respite...

Hi guys, things are difficult again here. Coo's poorly, his seizure level is up and he's either sleepy or has major mood swings and sadly lot's of Carers will know exactly what I mean!

I've been looking forward to some respite for ages.
A few days away with my mum (as usual!) and it's come around this week of all weeks!
Usually before a respite trip, I'm excited all week long and busy sorting things out for the trip. Maybe buying a few wee bits too, you know how it is but this week's been very different.
Coo's seizures and moods and the way they've been, well, I'm kinda struggling.
On one hand, I feel, thank God, just stuff everything else, I need the break! but on the other hand I'm thinking, with all the turmoil in the house around Coo's moods, it's not been pleasant planning the trip this time around at all so will I get the happy carefree time away I usually do? I hope so!

I've given Coo the meds he uses when moods are just too stressful to cope with and I'm kinda hoping things settle a bit before I leave in the morning and if not? Well, I'm confident Looby will cope and we'll just have to deal with it when I get back!

Time out...

Hi guys!
Well, after the last two days of meetings, I already had made my mind up we were going to the park today! Well that's if the weather would let us of course! lol
It was a bit of a slow start today as Coo had a bad night with 15 seizures so it took a while to get things back on track again but by lunchtime we'd donned the wellies and were all good to go!

Off we set, that's Coo, Looby, our wee Jack Russell Angel and me! We went to Eglinton Park which is always a pleasure!
It's such a calm, peaceful place whatever time of year you visit. You can see what I mean about it being a pretty place.
I just love it...can you tell? lol
I think one of the things I like about Eglinton, is their really friendly and relaxed cafe area - it's great! It's one of those places where you can take you're wee dog in with you and have a cuppa and a snack. It's a bit of a Godsend really as after a wander around the park Coo starts to tire and a coffee and somewhere for a wee seat makes all the difference and we don't need to rush off home!

In the end, we decided to treat ourselves and have some lunch there - no cooking for me so...Result! woo hoo!

I'm giving the Tournament Cafe a...

'Maz's Golden Paw Award' for being such a people and puppy friendly place - well done!

Even the muddy paw prints in the car didn't matter today but I'm considering another option...

What's the chances of training a wee Jumpy Jack Russell to wear these eh?
I don't think it'd be easy that's for sure! lol

Coo's bloods...again...

Hi Guys, things are still a bit on the difficult side here I'm afraid and it couldn't have come at a worse time! I'm busy again this week with social services and it's important! Then again, I guess there never is a good time for health hassles is there! lol

I think Coo's drug level is probably too high yet again, it's been steadily climbing this last month!
He's been sleepy or asleep most of this week again and he's short tempered and has the usual increase in seizure activity too. He sure needs more blood test done even though they're not due for another week!

Luckily Looby will be here to keep an eye on things so I'll still make it out to my meetings ok but it's always more difficult to concentrate when he's poorly and for whatever reason, I can't be there for him.

I guess all Carers feel a bit torn-in-two from time to time. I think life and Caring is sometimes a bit of a tug-of-war but it kinda goes with the territory doesn't it!

I hope things settle a little soon as we could both do with a wee quiet spell! lol
It's so important for Carers to be listened too so...

Coo's still got a sore arm...

Hi guys, I left for my meeting just after 8 o'clock this morning as planned and that was a bit of a result considering the week we've had!

Coo has knocked his arm again during yet another seizure so Looby was going to the hospital with him...well, that was the plan when I left this morning.
So...what happened?

Well, nothing really!
Coo decided, once he'd got himself awake and together, maybe he'd just leave it for another day and see how things go and Looby thought it best to go with the flow as it were.
In the end, it boils down to is this - it's Coo's arm and it's Coo's choice!

I hope he doesn't knock it again tonight though as it'll only make matters worse.

In other news - My meeting today!

So, how did it go?
Well, it was really interesting!
Our Local Authority is working towards a more personalised approach to providing care for disabled people and that's where my input as a Carer comes in!

It's so very seldom Carers ever get the chance to shape policies that untimately will have an impact on both their life and the person they care for. Even to be involved or have their voices heard at all is unusual so I'm definately up for the challenge - can you tell! LOL

To be fair to our council, the service we buy with our Direct Payment (D.P.)is very effective. I would not willingly be without it now! Those two nights sleep and the few precious hours to myself really make the world of difference to Coo and I.
Things were so very different when we struggled to cope alone before our D.P. began!

I'm passionate about support for Carers!
I know how very different things can be with the right support and what a benefit a good service can be - it saved us big time!

I'm hoping this involvement of Carers, at these early stages in the process, is a good omen of things to come and that their involvement and sharing of experience will lead to better services - now wouldn't that be an achievement!

I've a feeling it won't be easy but it will be worth the effort!

Coo's arm...

Hi guys, Coo's mishap is still a problem!

We saw the doctor today for Coo's usual blood tests.
While we were there, he had a look at his poorly arm - it's painful and now developed a bit of a clicking sound when he moves the elbow joint, well Coo never does things by halfs! lol

The up-shot is, he's hurt it during a seizure and needs to go to the A & E.
As our GP puts it so aptly...
"I do try me best but I 'aint got x-ray eyes!" He is a bit of a character, our doctor don't you think?
I guess, with all the scrapes he's seen Coo and I through over the years he's more of a friend than just our doctor!

Anyway, Coo's decided to wait - he's never very kean on visiting A & E! and our hospital is quite far away and Friday nights there are usually bedlam and best avoided if at all possible!
His reasoning is...one more day won't hurt things and it's his choice I suppose!

Hey-ho, looks like another hospital visit is definately on the go tomorrow!

Wish us luck and a speedy in-and-out too! lol

More mishaps...

Hi Guys, We've had a little mishap...well Coo has anyway!

I'm not sure exactly what happened but Coo's hurt his arm. He can't remember giving it a knock or anything and he has been limb jerking a lot this week so it's probably seizure related but who knows!

He has an appointment to get bloods done tomorrow so we'll let the doctor have a wee look at it while we're there!

In other news...
I've been busy with my Local Authority this week!

They were looking for Carers to help them plan their new personalisation strategy with social services so of course I agreed!
It's so seldom Carers get the chance to be involved with the policy makers and especially at a stage where they can influence the strategies and get hopefully a better deal!
I've a few more days contributing at workshops and I just hope they listen and the Carer involvement really helps us all get a better deal!

Wish me luck...I've a feeling I'm going to need it!

Settled...

Hi guys!
Things are a little bit more settled here and Coo's doing much better! Thank goodness for that!
Best of all...the sunshine has made a comeback! Woo hoo!

My pretty Tigerella tomatoes are coming on a treat! They taste really sweet too and are so much better than the shop-bought ones - result! lol

So, how was this week?
Well, basically it's all good! lol
I'm just enjoying the slower pace after last weeks struggles with Coo! I hope things stay settled 'n' sunny for a wee while - I sure could do with the rest! lol

Now, here's a thought...sunny care free days...wouldn't that be nice!

Carer Struggles...

Hi guys.
What a night!
I'm not sure what has happened but Coo has taken another tumble. He was seizing every 20 minutes last night so we're both shattered and today is kinda cancelled...well for a little while! Once I've had another cup of tea and got it together it'll all be ok!

I know he's cut his mouth and his limbs are aching but other than that I'll just wait till he's fully awake to sort out the damages - poor Coo!

Other than that, it's raining again so I'm going to don my wellies carry on regardless! and hope for more settled days,

Testing times and Sunnier times too...

Hi guys, thankfully I can report some sunnier times this week!

The lovely sunshine has come back to share it's warmth and best of all Coo was able to persuade the medical people not to sedate him during last weeks tests, at least he didn't have to worry about seizing during the procedures and that was his (and my), main worry!

We managed ok. At least that bit is all over and we just need to wait for the biopsy results so fingers crossed everything will work out ok. I'm a little bit worried how things will fare, especially as we now know, Coo will not accept an anaesthetic in a hurry - let's just hope it doesn't come to that!

In other news...
Looby and Steven had their first scan so...meet wee baby B!

Coo and I are going to be grandparents! Now how about that!
Looby and Steven got their scan at the very same time Coo and I were in another hospital having his tests done!

It was good we had some pleasant news after such an ordeal for Coo.
How are Looby and Steven? Well all they could say was - "thank God it's only one baby" it seems there's twins in Steven's family and they both felt one was just fine and dandy! LOL

Our wee baby won't come until the new year but my goodness It's exciting already! LOL

I think I've been stung by the smiley bug! LOL

Tumbling times...

Hi Guys, things have taken a bit of a tumble here!

Coo's been poorly and he's stressed out too - so yet more seizures are kicking around here right now!
He's had some troubles for a wee while and our doctor referred him to hospital - good you'd think? Well no...not to Coo!

He got the appointment in yesterday, it's for next week and already He's in a major flap about it. We've had major hissy-fits and grumpiness all day and I've been trying to be patient as I know he's upset!

Next, he's had a run-in with our son and that's never a good thing as they're kinda alike and neither really likes backing down - Typical!

Well, he's eventually admitted today, it's not the procedure he's bothered about, it's the fact they want to sedate him that's really stressed him out and now I think about it, if I had sleep seizures all the time, I'd be worried about that too!

So, we're back on the meds we keep for back-up at times such as these, to help calm things down. Poor Coo, I hope they start to kick-in soon!

I'm not really sure how I feel about this latest health problem.
I don't think I've had time to really take it all in yet as I've been too busy pacifying Coo!

What is it they say?
The life of a Carer is never easy?
Well, it's never boring either!

Hi Guys, well how does my garden grow?...pretty well I'd say!

In the greeny...

My fancy Tigerella (stripey) tomatoes are just peeping out and they're looking pretty good so far!
I hope they're as tasty as they look!

Remember the T.V. advert...Beans means H***ze?
Well mine sure are not the fancy brand named ones! lol

Who knew about them? I didn't!
They're a really vivid tangerine shade and look good enough to eat!

These are all wee alpine ones and there are a lot of them ready just now - woo hoo!
...and the bigger ones?
Well, they're still green and in need of some serious sunshine to help them along!

I've had a happy few hours in the garden today and it's been great. It all seems to be sprouting up everywhere!

Let's hope for some sunshine to help those strawberries along or at least some warm sunny thoughts to be going on with! lol

Hospital 'n' rainy days...

Hi guys!
I guess the rainy days are back again - it's been blowing a hoolie here and lashing with rain!

My wee plants are still safely tucked up in the greenhouse and it's well into June now.
What a month - we've had all the seasons! lol

Coo's been at hospital again to see the Neuro and things have kinda gone as we thought. They're not going to do anything more for the time being.

It seems the AED's (anti Epilepsy drugs), he's on just now are as effective as they're going to be and any more increases will not really help - already been tried!
I guess he's stuck on around 10 - 15 seizures a day and that may sound a lot but it's been worse...a lot worse! Three years ago, after a nasty run-in with pneumonia, it was upto thirty seizures every day for months on end so on balance... we're kinda ok with things - well, we can manage put it that way! lol

I think so long as we take time out when we need to and stay home when we can, things will be ok!
I'm glad we've got the wee greenie and my array of fruits and veggies on the go too as it keeps me busy and even Coo's began to take a bit of an interest - woo hoo!

Who knows, maybe even the sun will come back for a visit!
Let's hope so and if not...?
...let's keep those sunshiney thoughts for warmth! LOL

Sunny Days and Carers...

Hi guys - the sun has made a come back...yeah! lol

It's been cold, grey and very wet here over the last few weeks, infact give or take a day or two, May was pretty much a rainy month!

June has brought some lovely sunshine with her and I'm delighted! My strawberries are all in flower now and I'm excited at their promise of lovely fruit to come!

Even the flowers look sweet and pretty don't they!
Coo and I, have been taking things a little easier this week and spent some more time at home. The warmer weather makes him feel really tired so it's easier managed if we can stay home more, especially in the afternoons when he seems to tire most.

I must say though, for someone who doesn't like gardening, Coo's been pottering around today! I'm hoping this gardening lark is a wee bit infectious as he sure could do with some fresh air around him!

The sun so cheers and lifts the spirits doesn't it! It's just so soothing to feel it's warmth on your face!

Grey days make for grey moods so...
let's hope we all have some sunny days!

Happy news from me to you...

Hi guys can you guess my happy news?

Well, after the 'Winter wonderland of Looby & Steven's wedding in December...

We've had some great news!
...We're going to be grandparents! how lovely is that!
The wee baby won't be born until into the new year but I'm excited already! lol

We've not had little ones in our family for quite a while so this should be fun!

I decided to try my hand at knitting something for Looby's bottom drawer...(wee hidey hole for baby things!).
...and here they are...

Cute or what? LOL
Knitting, hasn't really been an interest of mine but I wanted to make a wee knitted something for my very first grand baby!

The loom is out and a wee baby blanket is on the go at the minute too.

I'm working up to a wee baby jacket next but there's plenty of time so I'm in no rush. I'm sure I'll get there.

Sunny hello on a not so sunny day...

Hi guys! Things have been a wee bit hectic!

Coo's still very sleepy and we've been more at home again this last week so...I've been busy pottering around in my wee greenie and guess what? There's an tiny wee tomato on my one and only tumbling tiger plant! Result - well start of a result, let's not count the chickens yet! lol

It's been really wet and windy weather here again so the garden still needs a tidy up but until it all dries out, it'll just need to wait!
I'm glad I finally got my green house though. It's allowed me to be able to still potter around even if the weather is a bit nasty!

So, in between keeping an eye on Coo and potting up my plants...I've managed to dig out my loom again too - well I like to keep busy hadn't you noticed! LOL

I think weaving's kinda cool!
I tend to pick it up when the Caring's a bit on the stressful side and it's soothing and makes me smile so it must be good for me!

This time, I'm going to be trying out some patterns for baby blankets ( another happy post for another day!).
Having no little people in our family for a long time and not having made any baby things before, I'll let you know how things pan out!

Carers day out...

Hi Guys, things are still a little difficult here at the minute.
Coo's still very sleepy and that only means yet more seizures.

We're ok, we're still hanging on in there!
I think it's the bloods and the AED (anti epilepsy drug) see-saw effect is with us yet again. I'm sure they levels are too high and the next tests are not due till next week - I guess time will tell!

Mean time, we've been living quiety at home, well...that's apart from the wee while out I managed to snatch on Monday! lol
My wee Carer group had arranged a walk and some lunch (we're trying to keep fit!). Anyway, the sun came out and it was a great couple of hours away!

Spending time with other Carers always raises a smile.
We all have such different caring roles but the thing is, we all understand and I guess that's where the bond is!

Back to the wee day out...
Bearing in mind, my wee green house and recent plant growing efforts, guess where we went?
...On a short coastal walk and some lunch in a garden centre cool or what! lol

The treacle scones were wonderful!
You know what? If I close my eyes...I can almost taste 'em all over again! lol

Lastly, a saw some of these...
Now, aren't they the most unusual tomatoes you ever saw - I thought they were anyway!
So...
I brought a couple of wee plants home with me!
You didn't think I left them there on the self did you and at 99p they were a bargain! lol

Carers care for herbs too...

Hi guys, Coo's been poorly this week, he has a temperature and has been very tired so there's been a lot of seizures.
So, while keeping an eye on things...I've been keeping myself busy pottering around the garden.

After a real nasty start this morning (monsoon style!), this afternoon turned out sunny and bright! woo hoo!
You can probably guess what I've been upto and if not -
Here's a clue...lol I've been sorting out the new herb bed!
All those seeds I planted earlier and then popped in the green house are at last ready to go it alone in the garden! Yeah!

It's looking good and I think when Coo wakes up, he'll be surprised at the change!

Now, let's hope for some nice sunny weather to help them along a little!

Paras over the Barras...

Hi Guys, guess what? I've been to the theatre in Glasgow and it was brilliant!
I went with my mum and what a real fun day out it was too!
We saw...
It's a comedy set in Glasgow during wartime and it's one of those shows that's both funny and touching all at the same time!
I really enjoyed it...can you tell? LOL

Coo's still a bit poorly, we're waiting for yet more blood test results. It seems we're either waiting to test or get results these days.
Anyway, our son was at home with Coo as Looby was busy yesterday. I'm so glad things can be sorted and I can get out sometimes as I needed a bit of a time out and a giggle, so did my mum and 'Paras over the Barras' sure did the trick!

Pear Trees who knew!

Hi Guys, I went to buy a fruit tree and bought really nice wee pear tree but when I got it home it turns out it doesn't produce fruit!

Confused? I was! LOL

Apparently, some pear trees need a friend or they can't grow fruit! Now come on, is it just me or would you think pear trees can make pears...yeah thought so! LOL

Anyways, a quick info check with my favourite search engine and it's true some pear trees are sterile, they need a pal to work and here's the technical bit it's called cross pollination - who knew! I certainly didn't!

It's for my greenhouse and as I don't have room for a pal, said, cute wee pear tree had to be taken back and swapped for a...

...niffty wee peach tree that can go it alone instead! LOL

Coo's been poorly and asleep today so he's no idea I've exchanged the pear tree! I wonder if he'll notice the difference!
Decisions...decisions, should I come clean or just wait and act surprised when the fruit appears! lol

Hi Guys, my wee greenhouse is up and raring to go and it's just as well as my propagator was beginning to burst at the seems! lol

I don't know who the company were talking about when they said allow 1 day for construction.
Coo and I took five days in total! Mind you we were taking our time and doing only a few hours each day but it was hard pretty going and the instructions sure were a puzzle!

None of the picture diagrams made any sense at all!
In the end youtube saved the day as some clever person had uploaded videos about how to build it and thank goodness for that!

All's well that ends well - my wee greeny is up and running and my wee plants are already happily getting used to their new home!
Now...decisions, decisions...

All the seasons in one day...

Hi guys! Well, we've had all the seasons in one day - from sun in the morning to rain in a down pour and then chilly wind blowing!

I've not managed to even start on my wee greenhouse yet but I'm sure things will improve soon. Meanwhile, my propogator is in full swing with lot's of wee plants nearly ready to put in their own pots now!

It's fun growing your own!
I think it kinda completes the circle a bit if you know what I mean.
Rather than just popping into the supermarket and picking up supplies, to actually grow things from seed, I think is pretty amazing!
Do you think I've caught the growing bug? LOL

Yet again, I forgot to mark exactly what seeds were where in the propagator so I'll have to just let them grow and see what pops up! Now, I know there's herbs, peas, beans, squash, peppers and a whole load of salad leaves all mixed in there somewhere and I guess it'll be fun working them all out...eventually! lol

Let's hope for some sunny days for greenhouse building!

Growing fun, hope for sun...

Hi guys, I'm so excited!

Why?...

I don't know about you but I'm really indecisive when it comes to buying something expensive and especially if it's just for me so I thought about it for a few weeks, couldn't make my mind up and deliberated with the 'do I really need this' talk too!

After much deliberation and a hundred will I...won't I's, Coo took the decision in the end and pressed the button to order this...!

Guess what? Yesterday my wee greenhouse arrived! Woo Hoo!

Now i just need Coo to be well enough and the sun to shine for a few days so it can be erected!

Sunny days...

Hi Guys, the sunny weather is back for a bit and...

...it's brought all the wee flowers with it too! woo hoo!
I've been so enjoying the warmer weather and pottering in the garden!

Coo's been poorly again, his blood test results are up 'n' down like a yoyo at the minute so he's been struggling to stay awake and stave off the seizures.
Main thing is we're hanging on in there and we're still doing ok!

I must admit though, just to feel a wee bit of the sun's warmth on my face is such a bonus, it's given me a bit of a boost!

I sure hope the sun sticks around for a wee while as I could use the wee bit cheer it usually brings along with it.

Rainy weather...

Hi Guys, it's raining here again!

With that in mind, I've decided to treat myself to some new funky wellie boots!
Well now, decisions, decisions, with so many natty designs, just which ones to choose! lol

Caring for plants too...

Hi Guys,
I've been planting this week!
Coo's been poorly again, I think it's viral this time so we'll just have to wait it out. He went for more bloods today so I guess the white cells will tell!

Meanwhile with being at home more again this week it's given me a chance to...dig out those wellie boots and sort out the garden!

Well, to make a start at least! lol

Potatoes are all in now and onions too so woo hoo I'm already catching the planting bug for this year! LOL

Hope for some sun and some happy planting!

Red Nose Day allthe way...

Hi Guys, did you have a good Red Nose Day?

I had a great time...Can you tell! LOL

Coo was poorly so Looby came to stay and keep an eye on things (they managed to pop in for a wee while later on!). Meanwhile, I grabbed my wee red nose and set off to my charity event as planned!

We had been planning it all for months.
The event was held in our local community centre and was a...Community Get on your bike for Comic Relief.
We used four exercise bikes and had them running from 9 a.m. all day right through till midnight!

Here's my friend Gill and I pedalling hard and it was a couple of hours in too!
Everyone came!
The local Primary Schools sent children to take a turn and the community all rallied around to make sure the wheels kept turning!
Everyone did great!
We all worked really hard to make sure it was a fun day.

Here we are having a bit of a giggle in the last few hours (minus the 'noses' tut-tut!).
You can see from the pics, we had a ball!

Best of all...we raised some much needed money for charity too so...job's a good 'un!

I hope you enjoyed the 'Red Nose' adventure, it sure was fun!

Stormy weather...

Hi guys, well the sunshine didn't last at all!

It's been raining all day and the wind...well, it's been blowing a hoolie! lol
I've still not got out in the garden at all!
Well, except for a mad wellie-wearing dash down to pop stuff into the compost bin that is!

Instead of waiting any longer in the hope of some sunshine,
I've decided to set up my wee propagator instead!
It's a bit like this one... I love pottering about with it so it should keep me amused regardless of the weather outside!

So...let the sowing 'n' growing begin! lol
I just got to sort out my seeds now - mmm, what to plant first!

Oh happy days - and that's a cue for a song too isn't it! lol

Carer's roller coaster or see-saw?...

Hi Guys, things are still a bit difficult at the minute.

Coo's AED levels(Anti Epilpesy Drugs) are still very up 'n' down.

It seems more of a roller-coaster ride than a see-saw at the minute but we're still hanging on in there!

He seems to have turned night into day too so he's sleeping (and seizing) throughout the day and this means we're more at home again this week!

I used to find enforced time at home a bit difficult but I've learned to accept this and make the best of things so it'll be crafting and cooking and if the weather improves enough I may even make it out to the garden for a wee while - who knows! lol

More bloods getting done tomorrow so maybe we'll have a better idea of what is going on - let's hope so!

I'm sitting here typing and guess what?
Yet again, the sun is at last trying to break through today! Woo Hoo

Oh, let's hope it sticks around for a wee while! Some time in the garden? now that would be nice!

Everything seems just that little bit brighter when the sun's rays have warmed them and that includes my mood too! lol

I hope you have some sunshine too and better still some sunny thoughts to match!

Dreaded Drug See-saw...

Hi Guys, it seems the see-saw effect with Coo's drugs is still a problem as this week they blood results show things are a bit low for a change!
Although we're hopeful things will still settle down a bit and i guess this weeks tests will tell.
Today, the sun tried to make an appearance too so things must be looking up! lol
Isn't it amazing how much a little touch of sunshine brightens your mood? There have been way too many grey days already this year so...
Roll on the spring!

I can't wait for the growing season to begin!
My potaotoes have been popped in an old egg box and are chitting nicely on the window sill as we speak! It worked ok last year so I am not deviating from the plan! lol
Now, I just need to sort through the remnants of last years seed collection and sort the peas I saved (they were brilliant!) and oh yes...pray hard for a some nice, sunny weather! lol

...and did I remember to clean them?
Ah well, I've a feeling the mud will be making a come back soon and if all else fails, I'm pretty sure the hose will sort 'em out! lol

New gregory pecks...

Hi Guys, I don't know about you but I suspect all Carers are like me and their own health appointments and issues are pretty much on the back burner until they can be fitted in and we really should try harder - well I definately should anyway!

I at last, managed to get for my eye test and guess what? Yet again, I needed new gregory's, Gregory Pecks - Specs that is!lol

Usually I go pretty much for a plastic frame that'll work with just about everything but this time there was a great sale on and...seeing as it was my wedding anniversary this week, well you've guessed it...I treated myself to a designer pair!

I liked these ones straight off and I really liked the price tag too (better than 1/2 price) so I was definately onto a winner! woo-hoo

I didn't realise how trendy these glasses are but I just Googled and found them on the How to look good naked website!

I must be getting trendy in me old age! lol

Just so there's no illusions...trust me, thumbs up from the looking good naked people or not...I'm not sitting here only sporting my new trendy glassed and a smile!
Perish the thought, it is February after all! LOL

If you've got appointments yourself, try and make some time for 'em and remember to look after yourself too!

The Carers crash...

Hi guys,
I think we've all had the what I call the 'Carers Crash' feeling from time to time. I think it usually happens, (well for me anyway), after a run of issues, hospitals, appointments or just generally, more than the usual hive of caring activity.
Suddenly, you find yourself feeling a bit off colour, out of sorts or shorter tempered than usual and then you realise you're just tired and need to re-charge your batteries!
Now, if I'm lucky I've reached this point before my energies are totally spent and I can start to re-dress the balance a bit and if not? Well...welcome to melt down! lol

Over the years I've kinda worked around things and found ways that work for me to bring my energy levels back up again. It's typical, but the best is always the most difficult to acheive isn't it and for me it's....(drum roll)...sleep!

Most Carers have disrupted sleep at some time or other and the lack of it, sure as heck is the quickest thing to pull you down and make everything seem just that bit more difficult! The problem for me is sometimes - well, most times if I'm honest, sleep just isn't an option so what else is there to help recharge things then?

***Crafts - a bit of whatever takes my fancy and usually anything that can be picked up or dropped at a moments notice fits the bill nicely! lol

***Cooking - slow or otherwise. I'm no Delia but it's nice to smell something tasty bubbling away and best of all I always get to eat the end results! lol

***Music - well, I love listening to Gheorghe Zamfir, I came across him quite by accident one day and fell in love with his music. The sound is just so magical and it's so relaxing too!

***Harping - Wow! Just how good does this make me feel!
It's just so...wonderful!
I never, ever felt I was musical at all but over the last year, harping really has become one of my passions!

When things are real difficult, it's so easy to lose myself in the music for a wee while and it always raises a smile even on the darkest days.
I guess it's been doing that for people for the longest time judging by this old picture!

Sharing some of the things that keep me happy and whole has also helped raise a smile today and I hope they've given you some food for thought too!

This weeks trials...

Hi Guys, Coo's been a bit more settled this week so I'm hopeful things are back on the up, well at least a little bit anyway! He had more bloods done on Thursday so we'll see what they say and just take it from there I guess!

I've been slow cooking again this week!
Time's been a bit limited and it's a lot easier to throw things in and just 'leave them be' than it is to take time out to do the watch, stir and take care the pots don't boil over, kinda cooking that usually happens!

It's really a bit of a standing joke in our family, if it can boil over or boil dry, it has done so while I'm making dinner. Now to be fair, sometimes, it's been down to Coo needing a hand but others, I have to admit, are my own fault as I've just been distracted by something else at the time and lost track of time! lol

Lapses in concentration happen to us all especially when we're tired...well, that's my story and I'm sure sticking too it! LOL

I've been busy out Demo-ing too this week!
This week was the 'budget' for our local council so we Carers (who could make it!), were all out with the banners to stand up for ourselves against all the cuts to services.

Looby kept Coo company, while I went to...tear a strip of our local council again!

They are still planning on closing all the local community centres in our area and without these buildings lots of community groups (including my wee Carer support group) will be out on the street with nowhere to meet and no chance of any support!
We've been campaigning all year to get them to see sense and it's been a bit of an uphill struggle so far!
Anyway, it seems we've won a reprieve of sorts. The council has decided to defer any closures for this financial year so the fights not over but at least we're not out on the street...yet.

I guess we live to fight another day!

Hard hat & flak jacket time...

Hi Guys, I still need my hard hat 'n' flak jacket right now as Coo shows little improvement. Since we reduced the meds to try and find a safer level, Coo's seizures have got a whole lot worse and last night was real difficult for us both.

I woke Coo at around 10 a.m. and managed it make it to church this morning, our son was here to help out if needed.

Thankfully Coo managed to stay awake till I got back but only just - he slept and seized on and off for the rest of the day. I was starting to dread things were on a downward spiral again but thank God, he's rallied around again, given me a big smile, eaten something and now seems fine!

I honestly don't know how Coo manages, considering all the seizure activity but I'm only so glad that he does bounce back!
So it seems, for now we've weathered yet another storm and I'm hoping for a more settle night tonight - if not...well, let's cross that bridge when we come to it.

I'm keeping my hard hat handy but I'm still hoping we won't need it at least for tonight.

On a lighter note...

I came across this picture online and it tickled my funny bone...
A hard hat with built in tea now if only that were possible I'd sure buy!

See-saw or roller-coaster ride?...

Hi Guys, unfortunately Coo's blood results came back and I'm afraid we have jumped back on that AED (Anti epilepsy drug) see-saw yet again!

The safe dose, in the blood stream is between 10 - 20 points and Coo? Well his latest test was 28! We've been advised to drop one of his meds by 25mgs immediately, keep an eye out for any changes and re-test again in two weeks.

Let it never be said, the life of a Carer is easy. I don't know about see-saws it's more like a roller coaster ride at the moment!

Hopefully the reduced meds and plenty of rest will help Coo feel more like his old self again.

Meanwhile, just like Bob...
I'll dig out my hard hat and hang on tight for the ride!

I hope things are more settled where you are!

Slow cooks and Sleepy Days...

Hi guys, it's been a bit difficult again this week.
Coo's been very sleepy and there's been lots of seizures as a result. I'm not sure if he's caught a sniffle and that's what's firing things up or if it's the dreaded AED (anti epilpesy drug) see-saw effect yet again.
You know the one, the drug levels are too high in the blood stream and causes problems, and then if there's too little, it's seizure city again!

Hopefully the latest blood results will come back tomorrow and we'll have a clearer picture, meantime it's...batten down the hatches and dig out that hard hat and flak jacket!

Happier news...

I've new slow cooker arrived at last! woo hoo!
This week we've been eating like kings! LOL
It's so easy to make even the cheapest cuts of meat taste nice and with Coo poorly and sleepy, I really like the 'throw it all in and let it cook itself' approach to meal times!
You know, I really do have a lot to learn from Delia! but I do try...or maybe it's just that I'm trying! LOL

What's in the slow cooker for tomorrow?

Well, let's see...
Chicken thighs, herbs and a creamy sauce, well that'll be something to whip up with pasta for a change then.
I'll let you know how it tastes!

If you've never tried slow cooking maybe you should give it a go as a Carer, I find it really useful, especially when things are hectic! You know the kinda days I mean, days when you really want to eat proper food but can't spare the time to cook - well on just those kinda days, the slow cooker's a Godsend!

Mixed bag kinda week...

Hi guys, it's been a bit of a mixed bag kinda week this time!

Coo's been very sleepy and we've been mostly at home this week so anything that can be, has pretty much been put on hold!
I've been keeping myself busy (and sane!)with my favourite passtime...crafts...Yeah!

Today I've been weaving!

I moved away from my frame loom as it was a bit sore on my shoulder so I've been trying out a peg loom instead.

I can honestly say it's quick, it's easy and more importantly it's FUN! lol I managed to get a hold of some real nice arran wool and decided to brighten up our sofa with some new cushions.

I'm taking my time and just enjoying working with the loom but I'm truely surprised by the way the fabric is turning out.

It looks pretty chic for homespun even if I do say so myself! LOL

I guess I find crafts a bit of a therapy, even a diversion when things are difficult.
Why don't you try crafts too?
It's fun and it sure works for me! LOL

I guess the holiday's over...

Hi guys!

Well, the Christmas fun is now all over for another year.

Did we all survive ok?
Well...I think so, at least I hope so!

The holiday period is no sooner over and already the Carer issues begin to kick in! We've had yet more problems with the dreaded meds...again! Honestly, the new drug has brought nothing but problems since Coo began taking it in November.

Latest saga...
We picked up all Coo's meds on the 20th of December - being organised, we never leave things till the last kick but best laid plans and all that...things have not gone to plan. I noticed at the time, the Chemist had only dispensed 4 boxes of pills but that's not really that unusual, the meds need ordered and sometimes we have to wait on further supplies so no alarm bells rang - till today!

Today, I got Coo to call the Chemist and ask if the rest of his meds were ready to collect. Now, it should have been a simple process but...err no, the Chemist insists he dispensed all the meds correctly in December!

We've had to contact our doctor and confirm he prescribed 112 pills and not 42!
Bearing in mind we picked 'em up on December 20th and Coo needs 4 a day - the maths just don't add up. If in fact, the chemist did prescribe 42 pills, they'd have long ran out and we'd have been in dire straits by now!

After all that organising poor Coo is down to his last dose!

The rest of the pills will need to arrive tomorrow or we'll be up the proverbial creek without a paddle! What a mess!

It's the problems that really could be avoided, I find so very irritating and I seem to resent more and more, the unnecessary stress they cause.

If we Carers can keep going, in what can sometimes be a very stressful role, why can't the professionals get it right too?

Fingers crossed they turn up tomorrow!

Old year...new year...

Hi Guys, new year is almost upon us!
Where has the year went? - It's time for a think...

You know, I used to get a bit stressed at the thought of a new year coming.
I used to worry about the things I said I'd do throughout the year and just didn't get around to, you know the kind of thing...lose a few pounds in weight, hold onto a few of the other kind of pounds and save for a rainy day...that kinda thing! lol

One thing being a Carer has taught me is to slow down a bit and just take a breath! The world still turns just the same while you catch your bearings a bit. Mainly it's taught me just to count my blessings a little and be thankful for making it through the last year safely in the first place! LOL

I guess, most people take that kind a thing for granted...good health, I mean!
While you are well and busy hustling and bustling about your life at such a great pace, you never need to give a second thought to such things. You can plan well into the future for work, holidays or pretty much anything you fancy and it's only when something happens to you or your loved ones that you really need to stop and think at all!

I think that's probably what I miss most. All the planning and looking forward to things, the certainty and order of it all. It sure was a lot easier when finance was the only issue to getting things done and we could both climb a mountain if we wanted to!
On the other hand, this slower pace of life has it's upside too! We have both learned how to adapt and find a way - there always is one - it's just finding it that's the tricky part! LOL

2010 hasn't been a bad year, well, not really!

We've had major trials and problems with doctors and meds and there's been lots of stress over that but other things have buoyed us up too!

** Coo's no worse and not nearly as bad as the dreadful 30 siezures a day all through 2007 - 8! Things are not brilliant by any means but they're a wee bit better than they were and that's a bonus in itself!

** With help, we made it all the way down to Getna and right through Looby & Stevens wedding! and what a brilliant day that was!

** I re-discovered lots of fun with crafts and hobbies from jam and fudge making to weaving and jewellery! Woo Hoo

** The garden was a bit of a refuge at times too - from peas and potatoes, to salad veg. and fruits - I had a ball, planting, growing, jamming and storing loads of goodies!

...so it's goodbye 2010! I'm feeling happy and optomistic about the new year ahead.

Carers and Christmas shopping...

Hi Guys,
I guess most Carers have been in this situation at one time or another!
a) When can I fit in some time to get those last minute Christmas shopping done.

b)If he's got to go with me...how will I distract him long enough to secretly get him a little gift too!

After the hustle and bustle and the real joy of Looby's wedding a few short weeks ago, we decided it'd be a bit of a low key event this Christmas.
Not that we ever go really overboard anyway, it's usually little thoughtful things we buy one another and anyway fundings usually tight too - when is it ever anything else where Carers are concerned :-o

Carers Allowance doesn't go far when it comes to buying little extras does it! Although it's amazing what little, inexpensive things you can find around town (if you get the chance that is!) and I suppose it helps that I make my own scarfs, jewellery, jams, soaps and lotions and potions too! lol

It's always nice to receive something personal don't you think?

I must admit as our kids are grown now, it's not such a frenetic hustle and struggle to get the 'must have' toy or designer clothing and I truely don't miss that struggle! lol but What I do however miss, is having little people around at Christmas time, all that wonder on their faces and sparkly eyes peeping out expectantly!

I guess that's why I'm so big on Community Christmas events and having fun and I guess too, that's why I don the pointy ears and elf suit each year and help out the big man in red!
It's real nice to share some fun with the little ones and spread some Christmas cheer along the way!

I'm going to chillout a bit, drink some hot chocolate and tomorrow I'll hit the shops but...let's worry about that later!
I hope you're not too stressed out in the Christmas rush - and if you're beginning to feel it...drink lashings of hot chocolate...it surely works for me! LOL

Brrrr Winter Snow...

Hi Guys, I think winter it now in full swing!

The garden has been white with frost for over two weeks and it's so dark in the mornings too and before you know it, it's back again by tea-time!
This moring, yet again, I had to scrape ice off the car and my hands ended up a nippy shade of pink - luckily they matched my jumper! LOL

It's official...the frosty weather front is here to stay...so hats are on, scarfs and mittens too, everytime I need to pop my nose outside the front door at all - any excuse to don a cute bobble hat! lol

I must admit though, I'm one of those people who love the snow! Everything looks so clean and pretty and you just want to run around leaving footprints everywhere...or is that just me!

So 1-2-3...
Roll on more snow - enough to make a decent sized snowman at least! LOL

One like this would be nice...

What's to like about winter anyway?

Coo had a good day yesterday, he unexpectedly picked up his guitar to join me in a song!
I play my harp most days for a wee while and sometimes he decides to join in too! so yesterday...it was an impromptu Christmas concert just for two and it was fun!

I'm feeling happy and a bit more rested today and I hope you're cozy and happy where you are too!

A winter wonderland wedding?

Hi Guys!

A winter wonderland?...it sure was!LOL

Everything went beautifully. The trip down from the coast to Gretna was lovely. There was crisp snow underfoot and sunshine overhead so I guess we had a break in the weather and God was smiling on us!

Here's our lovely Looby and her brand new handsome husband!

Awwwwww they are a sweet wee couple!

Coo's new meds are beginning to help a little, thank God!
They seem to be giving him some energy and helping to keep him awake so that's a big improvement already! He managed to last all day on the journey and still dance his daughter at her wedding too!
Now that is a stunner!...usually he'd have been dead on his feet by then! LOL

I'm so glad, Coo was well and things went so smoothly, it was a really happy, smiley, family day!

It sure was a 'winter wonderland wedding' and we all had a perfect day!

Looby's wedding fast approaches...

Hi Guys,

Remember way back in January when I mentioned Looby's wedding? well, is almost upon us!

Where has the year gone!

I'm getting a bit excited now and just hope everything goes ok on the day!
The invitations didn't go out till later than usual for weddings as Steven (the groom!) was still out in Afghanistan right up until two weeks ago but thankfully he's home safe and sound and they've all been posted out now!

All the preparations that are going to be done have been done so fingers crossed we've remembered every thing and anything we've forgotten?...
Well it'll just have to stay forgotten now! LOL

I'm trying to keep a lid on things a bit for Coo as the last thing we need on top of the new meds is a big dose of stress so it's the softly softly touch with him and a smiley 'everything's fine Babe' response!

To keep things busy - I never do things by halfs...
It's winter week in the local Community Centre where I work so I'm kinda up to my eyes in it there too!

I will be busy with Santa in his grotto, dressed as an Elf in pointy ears and all! LOL It's usually jumping, over 150 children came last year to speak to the big man in red and get some chocolate!

This year 'Owl Magic' are coming...Woo Hoo or maybe that should be hoot hoot! LOL
I'm sure the wee ones will love getting their picture taken with the Harry potter snowy owl and his friends and best of all the mum's will love the fact it's all FREE!

I love hosting free community events as all children benefit, especially the little ones from families where there is little money to spread around on such things.
A present from Santa and your very own picture with a snowy owl can make such a difference - the smiley faces all around tell me that's true!
Spread some Christmas cheer and if it's done for FREE that's good enough for me!

Wish me luck, I have a feeling it's going to be a busy, busy, bumble bee week!

The N.H.S. and the supported Carer...

Hi Guys - there's been a bit of movement on this!
The N.H.S. has come good and thankfully, I'm not so unsupported after all!

Turns out our GP was as hopping mad as we were!
He says, he didn't refused to prescibe the drug at all!
He asked the neuro on several occasions, to clarify who would do the monitoring as here the guidelines say, an E specialist is to monitor closely within the first 3 months.

Anyways, the long and the short of it is...the neuro has decided to relent and reinstate him back to his clinic! In the end I think even he's realised this whole situation was not handled well!

Our GP will now prescribe the drug as the ESN (Epilepsy specialist nurse) has agreed to the do the monitoring - which was all our doctor asked for in the first place!

Now couldn't they just have played nicely in the first place?

I'm just glad this resolved so quickly as from past experience, it's very stressful dealing with NHS issues - it kinda grinds you down. Thank God for the E nurse - she's the best and thank God too it's been sorted!

So...just like this wee kitten...
it's big smiles all around! LOL

Let's hope the new drug helps - even a little would be good!

N.H.S.and the unsupported Carer...

Hi Guys, I think it really is hard hat and flak jacket time here.

Things have taken a tumble and the N.H.S. is to blame for all the stress I'm under at the minute!

A quick re-cap of the story so far...

Coo's Neuro is a real nice guy...usually!
We've never had any problems and felt sure we could trust him in giving Coo the best care possible and we've never had anything shake this belief and trust...until now that is!
In August, the neuro wanted to have Coo try out a new drug and we agreed as at this point, still with 10 - 15 seizures every day, we thought, almost anything was worth a try.
Anyways, we agreed but our GP and he's a good, caring and trusted, family doctor, did not want to prescribe the new drug as it needed to be closely monitored.
So...we've been waiting around for almost four months trying to sort out who would be responsible and who would prescribe this drug that may or may not help Coo!

Now hold onto your hat for this one...It's been decided...nobody will prescribe!
We've had a very curt 3 line letter saying as the GP won't prescribe this drug the neuro will no longer see Coo and he's been discharged from the Epilepsy clinic!
Now correct me if I'm wrong but isn't the health service there to support people with severe disablilties and their Carers? people just like Coo and I who are struggling daily to cope with major disabilty and health problems?
Well, I thought so too but it looks like, when you scratch the surface, things are not so cut and dried.

I'm hopping mad and fit to be tied!

I immediately contacted the neuro's secretary, who has only ever been a very nice, helpful person before, to raised my concerns.
I told her, I do not agree, Coo is well enough to be discharged from the care of a neurologist given the problems and difficulties living and coping with such a high level of seizures. I mean, it's only a few weeks ago the out of hours medical services here, contacted us to say Coo's latest blood test had registered overdose levels, was toxic and needed to be reduced immediately.
Now, does that sound stable to you? Me neither!

I only hope the Neuro decides bearing in mind, both Coo's health and my objections, to reverse his decision and continue to at least try and help Coo.

Neither of us ever want to be in the position we found ourselves three years ago. Coo hit a major crisis point, with thirty seizures a day, was not under the care of a Neuro and it took almost six months to access the system and get some help.

It's a time neither of us will ever forget and probably the darkest time we've ever had. We felt so powerless and bereft and hell will freeze over before we find ourselves left in so un-supported a postion again!

I've dug out my hard hat but I really hope this resolves before things turn ugly!

I must admit though, I'm a bit like this little pic, watching it all from the cozyness of inside!

Fireworks are really pretty aren't they!
They seem to bring out a smile! Even on the coldest bonfire night, there's usually plenty of rosey cheeks and smiley faces around.
I think they bring out the big kid in us all and that's not such a bad thing - just to forget your worries and have a bit of fun now and again! LOL

I hope you're enjoying some firework fun too and more importantly keeping warm with lots of hot chocolate! Mmmmm

Painting...

Hi guys! I've been putting off some much needed redecoration for quite some time and decided today was the day!

I really hate all the upheaval that comes along with even a little decorating job so that and the fact paint fumes make Coo ill means we wait as long as we can before using any paint in the house.
This time though the ceiling and woodwork really needed a touch up so off we went to buy paint.

I'm really please, I found a new low odour water based gloss with practically no nasty smell so I'm hoping Coo will cope ok this time! Anyways, he pitched in and helped paint too so a few hours later (well maybe more than a few!) and a little bit frazzled around the edges too we were all done! Woo Hoo!

I asked our son what he thought as he wandered through and he said..."well, it's much the same isn't it!" I said noooooo it's nice and clean, his repy...'Oh right' is there any more soup left - typical!

Sometimes I wonder why I bother but at least I know it's been painted and I'm quite please we got around to it - at last!

Now what to make over next?
I've still got loads of paint left! LOL

Just keep 'harping' on...

Hi guys, anyone ever tried playing one of these?

I'm not really musical at all but I always wanted to learn to play an instument and liked the autoharp sound so I decided to give it a bash!
I looked all around, on Ebay too. I made up my mind and it took some time too as they're not cheap and I don't usually send that much on me! LOL
Anyway, in the end Coo decided we'd buy me one for my birthday and I've been tootling away ever since.
I love it!

As a Carer, I need to spend a lot of time at home when Coo's poorly so I've found (with a bit of trial and error!) lot's of things to do to keep me occupied and motivated.

From jewellery, soap, jam and even fudge making to sewing, knitting and weaving! believe me, in my quest to stay sane, while stuck in, I've tried 'em all and I admit, at times, with varying degrees of success! LOL

There are only so many hours Television can amuse you and then your brain seems to hurt or what's worse switch off all together...well, mine does anyway!

So when Coo's asleep it's the quieter pastimes and crafts and when he's not? It's harping time! LOL
I'm really please I've picked it up so quickly, I'm certainly no maestro but I'm not too terrible either! LOL
It probably helps that Coo is musical and I'm finding, sometimes while I'm playing, he'll reach for his guitar and join in too and that's when it's most fun!

so I'll bid you a 'happy harping' and a smiley cheerio for now!

Raggedy edged Carers...

Hi guys!
The dumpling tasted lovely!
Coo wasn't too keen but he's not really a 'cake' person so I wasn't offended - all the more for me! LOL

Being a Carer is never what you'd call easy. I think, sometimes it kinda feels like you just lurch from one crisis to another and this week has been one of those weeks!

It's been a bit of a struggle with Coo.
He's had lots of seizures this week so we're both feeling a bit raggedy around the edges! LOL

We're having some problems getting coo's new meds and that's added to the stress. It's turned into a bit of a saga...the Neurologist decided he'd like Coo to try another new drug and things seemed to be going along fine, well that was until our GP decided he didn't want to prescribe the drug! We're still sitting in limbo while they mull over who's responsible for prescribing and monitoring new drugs!

I can see why there's a bit of an issue, it is a new drug but it seems nobody wants to take any responsibility. Meanwhile Coo and I are waiting around and things aren't getting any better!

Hopefully, they will work it out sooner rather than later and then, we can at least try the drug in question and find out if indeed it'll help Coo.
What a medical mess - I hope they sort it out soon!

I suddenly remembered an old lady I used to visit who always said 'it's a great life if you don't weary' and she's right! So...here's hoping we all don't weary! LOL

Anyone for dumpling today?

Hi guys, I've always loved dumpling, especially in cold weather with my feet up (when I can!) and a...nice wee cup of tea! LOL

I would never have attempted to make it the old fashioned 'clootie' way my mum and granny did, all that mixing and boiling in a cloth!
With a troublesome shoulder, it would've been just too much stress with all the mixing involved! Anyways, my mum, gave me a microwave recipe for dumpling and it seems pretty easy so with my......mixing bowl at the ready...I'm giving it a bash right now!LOL

I'll let you know how it tastes once it's cooled enough to try. I must say it sure smells nice! LOL and here's a wee taster of how it should look! Mmmmm

Caring is never easy, I find my concentration is a bit impaired recently and I'm tired too. It's difficult to pin point if it's just the heavy load at the moment or if it's the general 'low' feeling a lot of people get as the colder weather begins to draw in.

Yet another afternoon spent amusing myself while Coo is poorly and asleep. I only wish he had the energy to join in a little.
Never mind though, the main thing is we're both ok and I remain hopeful better days are coming!

Wee luxury foods...

Hi Guys!
Carers are usually on pretty much of a tight budget and little luxuries are really treasured...well I know I do!
One of my passions is for really good quality jam and Coo usually buys me some on the odd occasion we make it out to a National Trust property or when we're on holiday!

So, I'm really pleased! even though I say so myself, about the recent jam making exploits! LOL
Here's what I've managed to 'cook up'so far...

There's loads of pots of nice foody things and among them...you guessed it...JAM! lol
There's some:
* Bramble & Apple
* Rhubarb & Bramble
* Strawberry & Bramble
* Apple & Raspberry
* Rhubarb & Ginger
* Apple & Plum

Can you tell I love those black or even purple juice filled brambles?
They are by far my favourite fruit...
well for this month anyway! LOL

There's also some tasty chutney in there. Made using mostly things grown in the garden too, I'm not really a big chutney fan but I do like a little on a cheesy toasted sandwich and I found an easy recipe (online where else!)so I've given chutney making a whirl too!

In order to satisfy my sweet tooth, I just had to give both the chocolate and vanilla fudge a go and there's still a box of each in the photo but at the rate it's disappearing it won't last long! LOL

Lastly, there's one sad and solitary (although pretty decent sized!) jar of Beetroot and a big bottle of Spiced vinegar which I made and used to pot up the beets and add to the chutney.
I must admit, I was kinda disappointed with the beetroot this time - not the taste as it's sooo lovely, very sweet and with a hint of heat coming through from the spiced vinegar but all my beet plants were very small so I didn't get as much as I thought...what is it they say about not counting your chickens before they're hatched?
I think, the wet weather here this summer definately affected the beets - they were teeny weeny! Never mind though as I only got the one jar this time, I'm saving it for Christmas!

Both Coo and I are eating really well!
I've still got lots of apples, plums and blackberries on the door step and millions of sweet baby potatoes stored. There's some cabbage and even salad greens still hiding under the big leafy plants!

All in all, as pretty much a novice, it's been fun growing our own. I mentioned to my mum, I'd hardly bought any veggies or potatoes in over six months and still had quite a lot of things on the go, stored or pickled, jam-ed (is that even a word? lol) or just beet into submission! LOL

I must have saved a fortune already and the really cold weather is still a ways off so the growing season 'aint over...yet!

The free food is good but do you know what I've enjoyed most?
The garden has been a happy and productive diversion while I've been at home so much these last few months, especially when Coo's been really poorly.

I know lot's of Carers who need to be home a lot and it's always difficult! It's hard to keep focused and just keep going at times! It really has been great finding and sharing ways to keep occupied and sane but mostly it's been fun!

If you still haven't tried growing your own, give it a bash!
It's definately good for you and I think it's good for the soul too, although I doubt the fudge making (and eating) is much good for the waist-line! LOL

In a soapy bubble...

Hi Guys, most of you will know, with Coo being so poorly, I've been stuck at home a lot lately and I suppose that's just typical of the usual Carer lifestyle eh?

Well, I've decided there's no time like the present to begin getting organised and I've got around to ordering my soap supplies and some new chrismassy moulds! LOL

I enjoy soap making, I find it kinda therapeutic.
It's also a pleasant and better still quiet pass-time while Coo's asleep and I'm so very much at home so...jobs a good 'un! LOL

I've got some lovely gift bags, a load of tissue paper and some pretty gold labels so...
I'm going to make the wee soaps and pop 'em in as Christmas gifts.

Handmade is always nice to recieve isn't it!

Guess what?

Hi Guys, I was trawling my P.C. hard-drive and came across some more of my poems so I decided to share...

‘The Carers Circle’

We care because we love.
We love because we care,
It’s as natural as breathing in freshest Air.
To love, hope and strive and continue to care.

This circle of caring, life, love and hope.
That’s what helps us continue and aids us to cope.
There’s another circle, it’s hopeless and bleak, a black hole.
It pulls down Carers, and so saddens their soul.

Some support is needed to help Carers through.
Please make sure they get it, it’s all up to you.
We can help with support and speak our mind.
For one day as Carers ourselves we may find.

Carers need me time too...

Hi Guys,
I'm just like most Carers and we all know, there are times when you're kinda stuck and can't get out much and that's increasingly been the case for me recently!
It's so important to find some me time too!

Coo is still poorly with lot's of seizures and he's very sleepy too so I've spent a lot of time at home over the last few weeks.
I've been keeping myself busy with this lot...

...making some jam! Mmmmmm!

I found a really easy recipe to make jam using my breadmaker and it worked out just fine - well actually it worked out pretty much better than fine...it's yummy! LOL

I guess it helped, I had some lovely ripe brambles and plenty rhubarb growing in the garden to begin with so in between checking on Coo, I spent a happy hour fruit gathering and eating! before I even started to cook! lol

I'm really a bit of a novice but I must admit...
I'm kinda pleased with the results!
The jam tastes wonderful!
It's now all bottled up with a cute label and of course a bow and it looks really pretty too!

When I was a Carer at first, I used to kinda resent the times I was 'stuck' at home with Coo but now, I seem to have found so many ways to pass the time while Coo's asleep, that it doesn't bother me so much.
Being a Carer is a different lifestyle, well it is for me!
It's a lifestyle full of contradictions, from the sporadic times of high drama and tension of hospitals, ambulances and emergency admissions to the other end of the spectrum with a much slower pace and lot's of quiet time spent at home. I've learned to adjust and realised it's ok to be different, it's also ok to say...hold on and...slow down once in a while too!

Regardless of how much seizure activity during the night, I used to panic if the house wasn't tidy and we weren't up and dressed by a certain time in the morning but then I realised if you don't sleep much during the night bacause you're on the Carer night shift...it's ok to sleep in a little and start you're day a bit later, the world still turns without your input! LOL

I guess people don't really understand and unless you've spent some time caring you'd never realise there are so many people out there all caring, coping and generally just getting on with things as best they can even if it is a bit of a slower pace!

I think my rat-race days are well and truly over and if truth be told I don't really miss them much!
Manybe I'm just getting old - perish the thought!

Carers keep going...

Hi guys, I wonder where our inner strength comes from?
We Carers just keep going don't we!
Come to think of it...I guess we don't really have much of a choice so maybe it's a Carer mind set!
What do you think?

I'm still trying to keep positive that things will improve, even a little bit and we'll catch a break but it's been real tough recently.

So how do I keep sane?

Well, I've developed ways to amuse myself while there's long periods of time enforced at home. From soap making to jewellery and crafts I kinda tootle with it! LOL
I've been trying my hand at loom weaving lately and it's pretty much relaxing!

I mean...my wee loom's not anything fancy, just a little frame one like this and some odd balls of wool but it's fun and yet another happy diversion when Coo's so poorly.

I'm still pottering in the garden - when our not so well behaved weather allows me! What a mixed-bag-kind-of-a-summer we've had this year...more rain soaked than sun soaked I'm afraid! lol

Never mind, September's supposed to be a bit better so maybe the sun will come out tomorrow although I'm not placing any bets! LOL

The main thing is we're both ok and I so hope you're doing ok where you are too!

Still struggling...

Hi Guys, the struggle continues I'm afraid.

I suppose that kinda sums it up for most Carers doesn't it.

Coo is still very poorly. Last night his seizures were every 15 - 20 minutes again and he's pretty beaten up - well, we both are really! His blood tests show his drug level is still up 'n' down on what we call the AED (anti epilepsy drug) see-saw so there's little sign of any improvement.

Luckily we have Looby to call on when I need a bit of a break and she's been brilliant moving things around to accomodate the current issues.
What a wee star!

New drugs are always a worry and I'm dreading futher problems with side effects as things are already pretty rocky for Coo as it is! I'm trying to be real calm, usually not a problem as nothing really fazes me...well not much anyway! LOL

So...I'm going to move onto more positive things!

Our weather here is as unpredictable as ever!
The sun has made another appearance after 12 days of rain! LOL

In fact it really has been brolly and wellies weather most of our summer this year! LOL Even our local church fete was washed out on Sunday - now how dare it rain on that - there's no justice is there! LOL

So as the sun co-operated and came back for a vist and Coo's seizure alarms were on, I did manage to sneak in the garden for a wee while! The veggies are still doing well - I guess the rain is good for something anyway, what is it they say? about clouds and silver linings! lol

Tonight, dinner will be baked potatoes and an assortment of fillings with some fresh side salad, drizzled with my favourite honey mustard dressing and best of all most of it came free of charge from the garden - cool or what!

I never thought I'd enjoy growing things so much...but I do!
It really is good for you and so is the fresh produce too! LOL

Let's hope for some sunnier times to come.

Hard hat and flak jacket time...

Well, it's yet again been a very difficult week. It's what I call hard hat and flak jacket time!

Carers never have it easy do they?

Coo is poorly and it's been a very worrying time. His seizures have yet again sky-rocketed off the planet for no real reason and it's been so very difficult to manage.

During the daytime he is awake in the afternoons, he's pretty good and he's my lovely Coo but then he tires and falls sleep, well, then it's bedlam - seizure city and very hard on us both.

He's nursing muscle and limb pain and his poor cheeks and tongue are bitten to shreds! I'm clinging fast to hope that tomorrow's blood results will shed some light on what is happening and maybe find a little improvement.

Please God, send a rainbow to chear things...

One like this would be nice!

Highland Games...

Hi guys!

All-in-all it's been a bit of a tough week!
Coo's still struggling with his meds but I think, thankfully things are settling, well a bit anyway! LOL

At this time of year, we usually take our wee disabled club to the local island's highland games and guess what?
The sun came back this weekend just in time - woo hoo!
All those strong men in kilts and...sunny weather too - result!
What do you think...
There sure is a distinctive appeal isn't there!

Anyways, it wasn't just the handsome kiltie men, it really was a lovely timeout kind of a day. Everyone enjoyed themselves, from the boat ride across on the ferry to tea and cream cakes in the pavilion and some chips on the beach on the way back, it really was a lovely day!

It does you good to spend some time with others who are in a some what worse position than yourself, kinda helps keep things in perspective and the kindness of others really does your heart good too!

So, just like Wallace and Gromit...
We sure had a grand day out!

I sure hope you've got some sunny weather where you are and if you're lucky...maybe even a kiltie man too! LOL

Back on the drug see-saw...

Hi guys, sadly, Coo's poorly again.
We're back o that up-and-down drug see-saw again.

Coo had his blood tests done yesterday and the first we knew of a problem was an emergency call from the NHS 24 service (out of hours doctors services).

It turns out Coo's blood drug level was in the toxic zone this time. The safe scale is 10 - 20 points and Coo was 26! It's been high before but not that high for a while.
Anyways, the emergency doctors advised he needed to reduce his dose straight away, so we did! Sadly the knock on effect is we're back in seizure city yet again and we're struggling.

I'm really greatful the doctors were so quick on the ball and phoned us right away rather than sending the results back to our own surgery as at least this way we've avoided further problems for Coo and probably another hospital admission too!

I'm clinging hard to hopes that things settle soon and hope things are easier where you are!

Edible gardening...

Hi guys, we had dinner from the garden again tonight and don't the potatoes look tasty!

They are red King Edwards and with some lovely butter, grated cheese and a fresh picked honey mustard salad they were sweet and tasted really great!

Come to think of it, with those rosey skins, they look a bit like apples don't they!

I never really thought about it before but I guess that's probably why the French call them apples from the ground! lol

At the minute there's the King Edwards and an assortment of salad potatoes on the go. The carrots and peas are still going strong too and there's loads of mixed salad leaves as well so at least we won't starve, well not this week anyway! lol

I can't wait! Next it'll be fruit! yeah bramble jam!
and... both Coo and I looooove beetroot so there's plenty for pickling!

A happy, contented and kinda stuffed to burst with potaotes and peas!

Sunshine...

Hi guys!
All together now...
The sun has got his hat on,
hip-hip-hip-horray!
The sunshine's back and I got out to play! lol

I picked peas and carrots, mixed salad leaves and some lovely red potatoes (King Edwards!) it was heaven after the deluge of rain the last few days!

Looby arrived and had a giggle...
I didn't realise, but there I was out in the sunshine, picking pea pods, wearing a white gypsy skirt, a wee strappy top and...my navy wellies to finish!
Well, the grass was still wet wasn't it! lol

I hope the sun sticks around for a while, it makes everything so much brighter and problems seem to fade into the background a little!

Yet more Carer rainy days...

Hi Guys, it looks like good old Saint Swithin maybe right!

It's still raining here!
Talk about Stevie Wonders hotter than July...I don't remember a wetter July! lol

Coo's still poorly even though the latest batch of antibiotics are finished. We'll get the bloods done again on Wednesday.
I've been keeping myself busy with my Jewellery making and crafts and the poor old garden has had to take a back seat for the minute!
I did manage to get some lovely rhubarb on the go and some strawberries too (well who can resist) so...it's crumble all around! LOL

I hope things improve weather-wise as spending a happy hour out there isn't really work...it's fun! LOL

Mean while...
The dogs are still munching away at my peas given half a chance - they don't mind the rain so they have kinda been beating me to it over the last few days!

I have found, carrots and onions taste so much better when they're pulled fresh from the garden! Who knew! lol
Only problem is at the minute, it takes longer to kit-up with all the wellies and waterproofs than it does to pick the veggies! LOL

Even in rainy weather there's always something of beauty to find isn't there!

Even so, I'm still holding onto hope for some sunshine, well, it is summer after all so it can't rain every day, can it?

Gardening and Carers...

Hi Guys, Gardening and Carers...
Pottering in the garden sure has been a happy diversion for me this year!
It's given me another focus while Coo has been so poorly and...it's been productive too! Woo hoo

Look! my wee veggies are coming up a treat! LOL On the whole, everything has done pretty well and I'm really chuffed! LOL

Although, it seems the wee dogs have a knack for finding ripe strawberries before I do! Next time I'll need to grow some in proper pots or there'll never be enough for jam-making! LOL

Carers have a difficult and sometimes isolated time of it and while Coo's been poorly, I've found pottering in the garden a pleasant pastime and I think it's really helped me keep up beat about things too!

Now wouldn't it be good if only we could order up some sunshine as well!

Hi Guys, it's been a tough week and we are indeed back in antibiotic land!

Coo is poorly yet again.
He had a bad seizure and aspirated some fluid.
The problem is, during a seizure, some saliva went up his nose, into his sinus and into his lung too so the result is he's struggling with another chest infection. He has a high temperature, flu-like symptoms and worse still, even more seizures to cope with - not fun!

I'm trying to keep positive about things, the seizure alarms are a Godsend as in between times I've still manged to potter about in the garden, knowing they will go off to alert me if he seizes.
God knows how I managed before we got them...well I do know how I managed - it was pretty darned hard!

Anyways, he seems to be picking up a bit now so I'm hopeful he's over the worst!

In other news...

I've been busy this week out working in my other guise (Reiki & Massage guru! LOL).

I began practicing Reiki & Massage around 5 years ago.

Coo was going through a rough time and Reiki and massage treatments were an option to help him cope as money was a bit tight (as usual!) so being practically minded me...
I trained to do it myself!

It gives me an outlet and gives Coo...some free treatments! I'm nothing if not resourceful! LOL

Anyway, on Friday's Looby has been drafted in to help out with Coo and I've had a change of scene for a few hours with some Reiki and massage. Honestly, I think I get as much relaxation out of the sessions as the community clients do!

All that aromatherapy, scented candles, gentle panpipes playing and half an hour in a softly lit room is good for the soul - it's probably the most peaceful of things that I ever do!

Can you tell? I love it! LOL

So, between coping with Coo, the Reiki & massage sessions and pottering in the garden, I've been busy, busy, busy! Maybe it's my way of coping, I think it probably is you know! I think I need the diversions to keep me sane and if they're pleseant diversions so much the better!

Harvesting carrots, what a giggle...

Hi Guys, I guess my carrots are ready to dig up after all!

I turned my back for a second and one of my wee Jack Russells (my wee old one at that!) had harvested the carrots herself! LOL She was bang smack in the middle of the garden and chewing down hard on 'em too!

I had a bit of a tug-o-war to retreive said carrot, when son pointed out what exactly was I going to do with one half eaten, dog chewed carrot so...I gave her it back! LOL
I'll be watching she doesn't sleal any more of 'em though!

After seeing these...

I guess she's not the only dog with a carrot craving!

Pet's are funny aren't they!
I think they're therapeutic too as my wee jackies never fail to raise a smile even when the caring role is so very intense.
I guess it's never easy for Carers so we have to look to the 'little things' to find a bit of fun or even just something to raise a smile!

Hi Guys, on the Garden front...well...
Everythings rosey!

Maybe I am a bit of a Charlie Dimmock after all! LOL
Just take a look-y-see...

My peas are now over a meter high!
They taste lovely and are pretty much addictive so it's just as well they're good for you! lol

I kinda plant seeds in almost anything...although I do stress it's my son who eats the noodles not me!

Those wee jackies of mine get everywhere!
If you look cosely you'll see them in the background and I didn't even notice them at the time, too busy snapping pics I guess!

It's Wimbledon time again!
so I'm sure glad I had some of these growing too, I mean, who can resist strawberries? LOL

I am enjoying growing my veggies this year and as a newbie I think I've done pretty well too - even if I didn't know exactly where I planted things or even what they were!
It's been fun finding out as they've all popped up!

Growing things is good for you - it's official!
It's given me a pleasant diversion and some happy time in the garden when Coo's been poorly - (a story for another day!)

Carers Week Puppy...

Hi Guys,
I came across this during Carers Week and wanted to share!

Here's the story...

A farmer had some puppies he needed to sell.
He painted a sign advertising the 4 pups and
set about nailing it to a post on the edge of
his yard. As he was driving the last nail into the
post, he felt a tug on his overalls. He looked
down into the eyes of little boy...

"Mister," he said, "I want to buy one of your
puppies." "Well," said the farmer, as he rubbed the sweat
off the back of his neck, "These puppies come
from fine parents and cost a good deal of money."

The boy dropped his head for a moment. Then
reaching deep into his pocket, he pulled out a
handful of change and held it up to the farmer....
"I've got thirty-nine cents. Is that enough to take
a look?" "Sure," said the farmer. And with that he let out
a whistle.. "Here, Dolly!" he called.

Out from the doghouse and down the ramp ran
Dolly followed by four little balls of fur.
The little boy pressed his face against the chain
link fence. His eyes danced with delight. As the
dogs made their way to the fence, the little boy
noticed something else stirring inside the doghouse.

Slowly another little ball appeared, this one noticeably
smaller.. Down the ramp it slid. Then in a somewhat
awkward manner, the little pup began hobbling toward
the others, doing its best to catch up...
"I want that one," the little boy said, pointing to the
runt. The farmer knelt down at the boy's side and said,
"Son, you don't want that puppy. He will never be able
to run and play with you like these other dogs would..."

With that the little boy stepped back from the fence,
reached down, and began rolling up one leg of his
trousers. In doing so he revealed a steel brace running down
both sides of his leg attaching itself to a specially made
shoe. Looking back up at the farmer, he said, "You see sir,
I don't run too well myself, and he will need someone
who understands."

With tears in his eyes, the farmer reached down and
picked up the little pup. Holding it carefully he handed it to the little boy..
"How much?" asked the little boy "No charge,"
answered the farmer, "There's no charge for love."

The world is full of people who need someone who
understands. It's National Friendship Week.

We're back!

Hi Guys We did decide to go away for a few days!
We went 'travelodge-ing it' and it was great! LOL

Ok, it wasn't abroad or somewhere very exotic but Blackpool sure was fun! We ate ice-cream on the sunny days and drank hot chocolate when it rained - which it did! LOL
I guess a break is kinda what you make it isn't it?

Coo was a bit poorly and slept a lot of the time, at other times he was pretty good so we had a relatively trouble free few days away and I think we've both felt the benefit of that.

What is it they say...a change is as good as a rest! and it kinda is! LOL

Incidently, while we were away we visited Blackpool Zoo and it was brilliant!
I got to tickle a tortoise of all things! LOL ... ...Now doesn't this one look like he's smiling? 1-2-3- Awwwwww!

I'm glad we went, even though Coo wasn't the best health wise, it really was an enjoyable time away!

The sun's back, my plants are growing! My peas and salad taste great and all-in-all I'm feeling pretty much content and smiley so that's a bonus too!

Doesn't the sunshine make for some happy vibes! LOL

Up and down again...

Hi Guys, it seems to be a regular thing now, just when you think things are getting a little better - bang! Things take a tumble and you're back to square one again!

We're ok...well I think we are but the last week has been bedlum! Coo's poorly yet again, the sunny weather makes him sleepy and well, you know how it is...anyone with sleep seizures is going to struggle with that aren't they!

The last blood tests were dire - last time they were too high and this time well, they're pretty much on the low side so it's seizure city here!
We're coping and in between times, things are good, no injuries, bumps or lumps so that's a bonus! LOL

In other news
This latest run, couldn't have come at a worse time as it's 'Gala Week' and I've been snowed under with our community events. I guess you can look at it in 2 ways:
* It's so much extra work and I'm shattered with all the extra seizure activity - I just want to sleep...
OR
* It's something different, a change of pace and above all Fun!

Mmmmm, guess what tack I took? LOL
Well here's a clue...

On Sunday it was the Community bus run for 150 people to a huge theme park, singing songs and a silly raffle draw along the way!
On Tuesday we held a Senior citizen's Tea Party with moi in the blue dress, white apron and a big ribbon bow in my hair - well you can't have a Tea Party without Alice can you! LOL The elderly all enjoyed it and the cakes were good too!
On Thursday it was Family Bingo time - fun and games, prizes and tea and buns too!

Last up (thank God!) was our Gala Day on Saturday, the pretty Queen was crowned, the town came and enjoyed a free days entertainment and everyone was happy!

Thank goodness I have looby to help out when Coo's poorly as I just wouldn't have managed it all! It was fun but I'm kinda glad it's all over!
How would I sum things up? Well...I'm tired but happy! LOL

Thinking I could do with a break after all the hustle and bustle of Gala week, I had booked a few days away 'Travelodging' it and in Blackpool no less!
With Coo being so poorly over this last week, we've been pondering if we should still go or not. We're supposed to leave tomorrow morning so I'm going to see how he is overnight and decide in the morning.

A part of me thinks, just go anyway and see how things pan out. I mean it's not abroad so it things do go a bit pear shaped, it won't be the end of the world and on the other hand Coo may settle a bit and everything could work out just fine!

I'll pack anyway and we'll just see what tomorrow brings!

Sunny weather...

Hi Guys!
The sunshine's back and thank goodness for that! LOL
I think things all seems so much easier and everyone's mood is always a bit brighter too when the sun comes out!

I can honestly say Coo seems to be on the up again, I was worried about him as he was very sleepy but over the last few days things seem to be settling so yet more to smile about...Woo Hoo!

My garden is coming along too and my wee greenie has an assortment of pots with things growing - still not sure what exactly but they're growing on anyway!

In other news...
Sadly, the council meeting didn't go as well as I'd hope - they voted against looking again, at their decision to close Community Centres. The local people are hopping mad and the fight goes on!
I've been in the local press making sure everyone knows what is happening and more importantly, they speak up about their concerns and I hope they do...loudly!

I'm glad I spoke out about their plans.
I had hoped they would listen but at least now everyone knows what the council are upto and it's not over yet!

I'm just pleased Coo's doing a bit better and the sun's come out! All this campaigning and Caring does kinda sap the energy a bit!

Let's hope the sunny weather stays for a bit.
Some sun on my face and some time pottering in the garden would be nice too.

Carers campaigning update...

Hi Guys, remember I was chairing a public meeting last month because our councillors decided it would be a good idea to close all their community centres?
The posts are here and here too!

Well...seems like some of our councillors now think maybe it wasn't such a smart idea after all...they've called in the papers to what they call a 'Scrutiny Committee' and want to look at this again!

I'm not sure what exactly they will do but let's hope something useful comes out of this as the local people really are worried!

Thank goodness we decided to make a stand as otherwise they'd have just pushed this through!

'Save our Centres' seems to be the local chant at the minute!

Fingers and everything else crossed! LOL

Hi Guys mystery solved! LOL
How on earth did I miss those pods - they're a bit of a give away aren't they! LOL

The strawberries seem to be doing ok too!
Ok one lot identified now onto the next, I really should have noted them down when I planted the seeds!

Let's hope the frost stay's away for a bit and they grow nice and big and juicy! LOL
